The Snow Watchers
The recipe called for mercy. The cook substituted bullets.
The mother-watcher held her observation like a ladle, ready to serve witness. She stood in the kitchen doorway — not cooking, not tasting, just watching the meal being prepared. Ten seconds. The stove explodes. The kitchen goes cold.
Nearby, another watcher — a healer by trade, one who had spent years in the burn ward, treating the scalded and the seared — saw a woman fallen. He reached to help her stand. This is what healers do. They lift. They mend. They restore the recipe to something edible.
Ten bullets. The healer becomes the patient. The phone in his hand still warm. The kitchen silent.
Two thousand cooks arrived that morning. Federal aprons. Government spatulas. They were not there to feed anyone. They were there to clear the kitchen of anyone who looked like they might be hungry.
The filing system notes: potential extinguished. The mother-watcher had three small flames at home, waiting. The healer had years of healing left to give. Both gone. Both cold.
We file this regret. The kitchen burns. The recipe is lost.
UNSENT.
